Last week was full of Bareos updates and community exchange. We hosted the Bareos Expert Circle, took part in the Kieler Open Source & Linux Tage (Kielux) and our co-founder Philipp Storz gave an interview to Heitor Faria from Brazil .
Bareos 25 Features: What’s Coming
These are some of the key features planned for Bareos 25:
- Windows bare-metal recovery: full system restore for Windows, including image creation and restore operations with Barri
- Hyper-V plugin: integrate Bareos with Microsoft Hyper-V to back up and restore virtual machines
- Proxmox support: ull backup of Proxmox guests (VMs and containers), direct restore to VM/CT, restore to disk through the Proxmox GUI, and handling multiple VM backups in one run
These features are aimed at making Bareos more flexible for mixed environments and easier to integrate into existing infrastructures.

Philipp Storz Interview with Heitor Faria
In his talk with Heitor Faria, Philipp Storz looked back at Bareos history and where it is today. The project started out in the Bacula community but has since become its own solution. Today, Bareos is actively developed and used by universities, public institutions and enterprises that need reliable, auditable backups.
The philosophy of Bareos is to be and stay 100% open source, keep the software freely available. Users can see the code and always have full sovereignty over their data. Transparency builds trust.
Philipp Storz
In the interview, Philipp also shared:
– Why sustainability matters – open source alone isn’t enough, it needs professional support and subscriptions to stay reliable long term.
– How partners help organizations adopt Bareos, especially in regions like Latin America where demand is growing.
– The balance between community contributions and enterprise requirements and how both shape Bareos roadmap.
